When facing a separation, divorce, or other family law matter, it is natural to feel overwhelmed. We get it: emotions often run high, and uncertainty about the legal process can make decisions feel even more daunting.
It feels like the weight of the world is resting on your shoulders, and you don’t know what steps you should take next.
This is why our family law team prides itself on supporting clients at every stage, starting with a clear, fixed fee appointment designed to give you confidence and clarity from the outset.
If you are in need of friendly, knowledgeable experts in family law, take a few minutes with us to read more about the process.

The benefits of seeking legal advice early
Getting in touch with Thomson & Bancks at an early stage can significantly reduce uncertainty and help prevent costly mistakes. A fixed fee appointment – which we will cover in a minute – allows you to gain a clearer understanding of the legal process, including how divorce proceedings work and how financial matters and child arrangements are dealt with as part of the process. You will also gain insight into court procedures that may apply specifically to your situation.
Importantly, this initial meeting gives you the chance to get to know your lawyer, understand our approach and pricing, and decide whether Thomson & Bancks is the right fit for you. There is no pressure to move forward, and we are always happy to assist in whatever way best supports you.
So, how does the process begin?
Our family department offers a fixed fee initial consultation with an experienced family lawyer. This meeting provides an opportunity to discuss your individual circumstances in detail, receive tailored legal advice, and understand the options available to you. The appointment costs £250 plus VAT and is purely an advice meeting, with no obligation to instruct us for further work.
During the consultation, we will explain what steps you should prioritise, outline realistic timescales, and talk you through what next steps could look like. We also take time to explain what you might expect if you decide to proceed on your own, such as using the online divorce process, so you can make informed choices with confidence.

Timescales on the divorce process
If you live in England or Wales and are seeking a divorce, the process itself usually takes around 26 weeks, which is 6 months. However, due to court process times, a more realistic timeframe is often closer to 8-9 months. These timescales can vary depending on individual circumstances, particularly where financial matters need to be dealt with, as it may not be appropriate to immediately apply for a Final Divorce Order at the point a court informs you that you can make that application.
Financial matters of a divorce are more important than the Final Divorce Order, and this is an area which will be discussed with you by our family team.
When can mediation help?
Mediation can be a valuable option when both parties are willing to engage and open communications where they have not been able to do so themselves. Mediation can be considered for dealing with financial matters but also child arrangements. Mediation provides a structured environment to explore solutions and can help the parties reach outcomes.
Mediation is an option which is recommended before any court proceedings are issued, as it can save time, reduce legal costs, and limit conflict and time in attending court. Courts also expect parties to demonstrate that they have attempted to resolve matters through mediation before pursuing formal litigation.
